How Do I know I have Depression?
It is common to feel sad or in despair from time to time, but if this low mood persists it may be a depressive mood disorder. Depression ranges in seriousness from mild, temporary episodes of feeling sad, down, or blue, to severe, persistent depression, which may significantly impact the way you think, feel, and behave. Signs and symptoms vary from person to person, but may include:
Feelings of sadness
Loss of interest in daily activities
Feeling sad often
Indecisiveness, distractibility and decreased concentration
Insomnia or excessive sleeping
Changes in appetite
Fatigue, tiredness and/or a loss of energy
Reduced sex drive
Thoughts of suicide
Feelings of hopelessness
Crying spells
If these symptoms are interfering with your ability to go about your daily activities, such as work or school, if they are negatively affecting your relationships, or if you have unsuccessfully tried then you may need to see a professional that can help you get on the road to recovery.
Mental Illness
Depression is a mental illness, which one should not confuse with the short-term emotional distress, anxiety attacks or feeling low, which also are constituents of depression. Anyone can feel low for a brief period of time, or have anxiety attacks once in a while, but that does not mean they are suffering from depression. Depression is much more serious than that, and is a persistent feeling of sadness, loneliness, grief, uselessness, and emotional pain. If not treated at the right time, it can lead to a person turning suicidal, and may try to harm himself/herself or commit suicide.
We approach patients with depression through various routes at one time to make the treatment effective, and help patients recover from their disruptive mental state sooner. First of all, we listen, understand, analyze and evaluate the problems of the patient through verbal counselling sessions, and then categorize the depression level medically to define the treatment path to follow. Depression is treatable, and there are many effective treatments available.
